Xbox 360: PC Not Listed FIX

==THE PROBLEM==

For a long time, I’ve been successfully streaming video (using Windows Media Player) and audio (using Zune) to my Xbox 360. I just recently had a couple of updates to my PC: new CPU, new ram & a second video card – but no changes to the hard drive or windows. I did have to redo my windows activation since it relies on the CPU, but thats it! There were no problems and everything came up as usual. All the sudden, my xbox could not see the PC. However – the PC had no problem seeing the xbox!

I tried everything. I double checked that all services were running, automatic and started. I disabled sharing in WMP and re-enabled it. I even reinstalled ZUNE to recreate the sharing, but nothing. All uPNP, SSDP, Zune & WMP Network Sharing services were running with no errors.

==THE SOLUTION==

I assume by this point you’ve reset your router, your xbox and your PC multiple times hoping the problem will correct on its own. Now this isn’t a solution for everybody as different scenarios could have multiple problems, but it did work for me! I found on a lot of sites people talking about resetting the DRM entries on your XP machine. I figured the fix would be different on Vista since nobody was talking about it – and because its 2009, not 2005.

It’s called DRM – Digital Rights Management. You get the ‘PC Not Listed’ error code when the Windows Digital Rights Management (DRM) system on the computer is corrupted. The fix is fairly easy.

Make sure you are logged in as an administrator. Open up windows explorer by clicking on ‘Computer’ at your start menu. (you can also do this by going to start>run and type in userinit.exe – press enter)
In the top left corner, click on Organize and roll down to ‘Folder & Search Options’.
Click on the View tab and scroll down. Change the radio button about half way down to ‘Show Hidden Files and Folders’. Then, two checkboxes below that option is a checkbox that says ‘Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)’ and make sure it is UNCHECKED. Click Apply and Okay.
Back in your computer window, goto your C: drive (or wherever you installed Vista to) and you’ll see a folder called ProgramData. We are looking for this folder: c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM
Rename the DRM folder to DRMBackup. If it gives you any errors, once again, check to make sure you are an administrator.

Choose the Upgrade button and let it do its magic. When it is completed, I recommend restarting the XBOX and the PC. Make sure you go through your Windows Media Player settings again to double check everything is being shared. Also, make sure the following services are started by going to start>run and typing in services.msc :

uPnP Device Host
SSDP Discovery
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
Zune Wireless Configuration Service (only if you stream your zune library to your xbox)

Last but not least – doublecheck that your Windows Firewall is not blocking anything important. Easiest way to do it is to disable the firewall completely and see if things work. If they do, you know there is an exception you need to allow.

P.S.S. – Another potential solution provided by Jason (thank you!) is to disable ICS. Easiest method is to go to control panel > network and internet > right click wireless or wired connection and choose properties. Click the sharing tab and clear the checkbox for ‘allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection’.

What Is Kinetic Typography?

Edit: Please excuse my poor writing skills – I am a little under the weather today.

What is Kinetic Typography? “Kinetic Typography refers to the art and technique of expression with animated text. Similar to the study of traditional typography of designing static typographic forms, Kinetic Typography focuses on understanding the effect time has on the expression of text. Kinetic Typography has demonstrated the ability to add significant emotive content and appeal to expressive text, allowing some of the qualities normally found in film and the spoken word to be added to static text.” When news broke that drummer Travis Barker (Blink 182) was injured in a plane wreck (read), a comment was made about some video a fan had created weeks before. Shown below, the video is just an entertaining and well-done animation showing off some of the ingenious creativity artists can present using with something as basic as text.

While scouring the internet for some closely related videos I found this short of a Streetlight Manifesto tune. The animation is fantastic and I wish it was the full song – but then again, the music slowly becomes aggravating :/

Moving on! There are actually a few different ‘types’ of Kinetic Typography. One in its sincerest form is the opening credits for the film Thank You for Smoking! (below) This type doesn’t necessarily involve a lot of animation, but more or less is still considered Kinetic. You will start noticing this form of design in movies as they continue to pick up this trend for it’s eye-catching and simple form.

Another representation of Kinetic Typography in movies is the opening sequence for the more widely known “Catch Me If You Can”. I didn’t have much luck finding a video with higher quality but you’ll get the gist of it.

Kinetic Typography is an artform. Ending our list of inspiration and fun are these two amazing videos; one explaining text and fonts by the Vancouver Film School, the other just a hilarious skit called “Who’s On First?” by Abbott & Costello.

The Triboro

An amazing TV Pilot I found browsing vimeo..definitely worth checking out. I do suggest fast-forwarding through the 50 second to the 1:10 mark if you’re not a fan of vomit. They seem to over do it in the beginning. Some of it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense though I’m assuming they will explain more if the story continues. We’ll see if this episode ever becomes anything!

This is a short form TV pilot for an episodic one hour dramatic series. The series is about a group of youth in The Triboro (Olympus, Black Mountain, & White Valley) that join forces and stand up to the ring of corruption that has taken control of their towns. It is a suspenseful, noir, epic, not neglecting all the teenage stuff that keeps things honest.

The first episode “Trouble in Boro Olympus” is the introduction to this complex tale.

Grant Masterson (Michael Scott King) and Alex Jones (Matthew McGorry) are raking in cash selling cups to their peers at a huge house party. When a drunk friend and a beer cup deficiency pull them away from the festivities, Grant and Alex find their vision of Olympus changed forever.

Shot on 35m film on location in Haskell, Ringwood, and Wanaque, NJ.

Winner of “Best Director” at the New York Television Festival 2008.
